I recently had the incredible opportunity to speak at the Association of Workplace Investigators (AWI) Annual Conference in San Diego, alongside my esteemed colleagues Kym LeGolvan, Megan Miller, and Elena Acevedo. Our topic? The intricacies of investigating complex sexual harassment claims – a subject that’s as challenging as it is crucial in today’s workplace landscape.

Preparation Meets Passion

The journey to our presentation, “The Room Where it Happened: Investigating Complex Sexual Harassment Claims,” included countless hours poured into crafting a session that would not only inform but truly engage our audience of fellow investigators. Our goal was ambitious: to distill the complexities of these investigations into a compelling, informative one-hour presentation.

Sharing Knowledge, Gaining Insights

During our session, we used a variety of mediums, from graphics to videos, to delve into:

• The unique challenges posed by complex sexual harassment cases
• Strategies for navigating sensitive interviews using trauma-informed interview techniques
• Best practices for maintaining objectivity and mitigating any potential biases

The experience of sharing our collective knowledge was incredibly rewarding.

A Collaborative Effort

I cannot overstate how grateful I am for my co-presenters. Kym, Megan, and Elena each brought unique perspectives and invaluable expertise to our presentation. Our diverse experiences melded into a comprehensive overview that seemed to resonate with our audience.

Looking Forward

As I reflect on this experience, I’m filled with appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to the professional development of my peers. These types of investigations are never easy, but they are essential for fostering safe, respectful workplaces.
